Damien is a lighting, sound, and projection designer for both theatre and live entertainment. He is primarily based in Hutchinson and Wichita, Kansas, but he is willing to branch out for new opportunities and experiences. Damien has an Associate of Arts from Hutchinson Community College and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Wichita State University. Currently, Damien is working at Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre as the Projectionist and Lighting/Theatre Technician. Damien’s current academic interests include psychology, sociology, and communication studies as applied to theatre. More specifically, he is interested in how specific techniques in theatre design can be used to alter people’s perceptions of certain events that occur on stage. He has always been fascinated with the way that art and creativity impact human emotion, and is interested in pursuing that interest further through his own personal work in theatre design. Damien likes to experiment with color, shadow, harsh lighting angles, dynamic sound, and long-term soundscapes. Utilizing these techniques combined with certain principles of psychology, he hopes to create a unique mental experience for every individual in the audience for each theatre production he works on.
My Artistic Statement:
When I seek out to fulfill the needs of a lighting or sound design project for any theatrical medium, I start by asking myself what it is I would want to feel as an audience member experiencing my design. What is most important to me about my work is that it is not static or simple. Lighting a production is more than just illuminating a stage. It is about purposefully manipulating light, shadows, and color in order to create a unique visual representation of the established mood within any given scene, dance, or musical number. However, I also believe that all light should serve a purpose, not simply serve as superfluous eye candy. In any given moment, the lighting should be reinforcing the intended point of focus for the audience. I believe that sound design should behave in a much similar way. All of the sound effects, soundscapes, background tracks, and reinforcement placement should help to amplify audience immersion. In regards to sound design, the world of the play should be embedded in the minds of the audience through purposeful auditory stimulation at specific moments. Regardless of the work that I am doing, a complete immersion into the world of the art through design always remains my primary goal.
